[~markrmil...@gmail.com] as the man who conceived SolrCloud, I'm sure you will 
have more insight into the problems with different approaches.

Do we have a choice of not scaling to a VERY LARGE cluster ? I think it will be 
suicidal. 

What we need to do is identify and list the the low hanging fruits and solve 
them one by one.
