Hello, thanks for asking. We're working hard to get beta 18 done at this
point, which hopefully will be our last beta. You can follow our progress (or
chip in yourself!) at our beta 18 milestone:
https://github.com/apache/lucenenet/milestone/11 - many of those items have PRs
already or are waiting on ICU4N or J2N updates that are either waiting to go or
in progress.

I hope we can get beta 18 done soon, probably not by the end of this month,
but maybe April? There's only two of us doing most of the work currently and
we're pushing as hard as we can. I'm working nights and weekends on this in my
personal time. Without additional community help, it'll take longer.

Meanwhile, it would help us greatly if everyone can kick the tires on the
beta 17 NuGet package, or better yet if you can, the latest master code. Just
using the library and letting us know if you have any issues would be very
helpful. Beta 17 has had 400,000+ downloads in the last 4 months since the last
release, with near zero reported issues. The 4.8 betas have been pretty stable
for quite a while, and many people use them in production. The only reason for
continuing with the "beta" moniker is that we do have some more breaking
changes to do to the API, and we want to stabilize the API at beta 18.

After beta 18, we'll move towards a release candidate and then final/GA
release with a stable API. That will constitute a lot of benchmarking, unit
test, demo, and documentation work, that you can see at the 4.8.0 milestone:
https://github.com/apache/lucenenet/milestone/1

My current personal goal (speaking only for myself) is to have the GA
release done this summer, but it'll certainly help meet that goal if we can get
more community contributions. @NightOwl888 and myself (along with some of our
other not-currently-active PMC members and committers) would certainly be glad
to help with any startup friction or issues you have jumping in to contribute.
Don't hesitate to reach out. We need the help and would be happy to help get
anyone up and running as a contributor!

Closing this issue as I believe I've answered the question as best as we
possibly can, but feel free to respond with any questions or comments.
