That is great! The start of contributing is definitely the hardest part. That is what the community should be able to help with.
One thing to try is to just start a discussion here on the mailing list about what you are interested in trying to do. From there, we can provide hints about next steps which should look familiar given that you have read the FAQ. At that point, it should be all downhill. (in a good way).
