Bigtop is cutting an RC this week for their 1.1.0 release. I've checked that the mahout 0.11.1 bigtop debian package works on a newer Ubuntu by running an old-style recommender job as well as checking that the spark-shell works correctly.
I'm going to call it good unless anyone wants to chime in and try it out too. Thanks!
