Adam,
I agree about this idea and I think you are onto something good. Each of us 
should find our local newspapers, since they're more likely to be hungry for 
content and more likely to accept submissions from what they may see as random 
people.

Living in Queens, in NYC, I see many local newspapers being distributed every 
day. From big ones like AM New York and Metro (competing free dailies), to the 
Western Queens Tribune (I think that is its name), to many more, I plan to 
collect their contact info and spread our OOo 2.0 press release when it comes 
out. Local penetration is important for the mindshare and marketshare game. And 
getting press releases accepted is simply a matter of volume. We send out 
enough, and we'll get some fraction of them published.

Thanks for the idea! I'll help support it as much as I can.
