Maybe contribute an detailed mode for a "maven profiler mode" feature (using an eventspy for example). Say something that would display timing informations about plugins executions durations and so on. Imo, this is something everybody looks at when a build becomes longer.
I've seen implementations here and there, but doing something that would make it into core (at least meaning in the standard distribution) in the short term would definitely be something greatly useful and visible to maven end users.
