Out of curiosity. @Michael: Do you have a FreeBSD box or something else BSD at hand? Can you build the surefire tag of that version locally without any issues? I am getting IT failures on OpenBSD here. On Jenkins nothing is failing. Would be interesting how that looks on FreeBSD.
