I setup host, username, directory, and private key properties for this repo, but left password/passphrase out (since my private key doesn't use a passphrase). When I use this repo to deploy, it gives an error saying that the passphrase wasn't specified. This is a valid use case, and indeed constitutes many of the use cases for going to private key ssh in the first place.
