I'm not saying this is a good idea- it might have several side effects. But you 
could try just to see if it solves the current problem. Anyway, the xalan 
version that shipped with pdf plugin 2.4 was a rather old one (2.4.1), the 
issue that I have in mind was only fixed in 2.7.0. You can get it here: 
http://xml.apache.org/xalan-j/

If that doesn't fix your problem: can you try to cut down your project to a 
small test case and attach it here so we can reproduce it? Thanks!
