I had the same problem and hacked a fix into the Mojo; a patch is attached
against the current maven-checkstyle-plugin svn source. The property
configFile can be used to set a checkstyle configuration file from your POM.
It's working fine for me right now, though I make no claims about how correct
it is in the grander scheme of things.
