It only fails with 'maven announcement' but not with 'maven
announcement:generate-all' which is called by xdoc for the downloads page.

I thought so, but when I remove the version entry, the
announcement goal fails like:

Missing "version" element in the POM for release 1.10-SNAPSHOT.
However, running xdoc correctly generates the SNAPSHOT announcement...
Any quick idea or do I have to go bug hunting?
