I personally have never trusted any linux based package manager to install any java software, maybe that's just me being paranoid..
That being said, I have observed many users referencing having installed ant via <package manager> on linux <distro> in the dojo users list. As long as the maven devs don't have to maintain the distros (I can't imagine how painful it would be, and if you are going to do it let's not forget those of us using debian based packages - ubuntu is gaining quite a bit of ground these days) it seems like it might possibly be beneficial to enough "average joe" users to warrant further inspection.
