people.apache.org has an smtp server (ssl at port 465) that uses your zzapache credentials. I have added that account at gmail. When those credentials go out-of date you get what looks like a mailing list bounce, which is really from gmail.
So I suppose the release whizzbang autogeneration mail could just use people.apache.org directly. I'm not so high-tech, so I use "keyboard".
