Git 1.8.x changed the output of the human readable 'git status', scm 1.9 ( and quite a few versions earlier ) switched to using the git porcelain output. I've been using 1.9 and done some releases with a manually configured scm 1.9 without issue. Tho I've not yet tested this staged release plugin.
