Kudos to you for pointing this out.  Yes the mailing list should always be
the
primary mode of communication.  Decisions should not be made on IRC.
However
people may need some live communication mechanism at times rather than
sending
several short emails and waiting for a response each time.  This is a big
debate though.
We just need to be diligent to make sure anything of value discussed on IRC
is posted
here on the mailing list.

I also know that IRC access is a problem with several corporate firewalls so
I went ahead
and set up the following cgi based irc proxy:

http://www.safehaus.org/cgi-bin/irc.cgi

You can use it to get on a number of preselected channels on freenode and
the codehaus
servers.  Hope that ameliorates some of your concerns.  Another thing we
need is a nice
bot to capture a log and post it on the MINA site.
