If you use OGNL 2.7 from: http://maven2.opensymphony.com/ognl/ognl/2.7.1/ and properly compile the expression, you will get bytecode-enhanced execution (via javassist) at full speed and no noticeable difference between MVEL or probably even most handwritten code. -h
