I had a similar issue discussed here:
http://www.nabble.com/Problems-with-SSLFilter-td17155952.html. I'm using the
1.1.x branch (specifically 1.1.3), and it would seem to halt while negotiating
the SSL connection, eventually timing out. I was able to get it temporarily
fixed by downgrading to 1.1.1.
I tried the fix you described, and it solved the problem in 1.1.3.
