HI Bill,
I might be shooting in the dark but I proposed a fix for a very very bad bug in
Android 4.4 here:
[https://android-review.googlesource.com/c/platform/libcore/+/61911] . It was
fixed but probably never made it into the 4.4.X branch. You might be still
suffering from that bug.
If you would like someone to look at your issue, we're going to need code that
will reproduce the problem you are seeing.
