echo <value> > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
        <value>  from 0 to 7

works for me :-)

I think that it should be something like:
        xrandr --output LVDS0 --set BACKLIGHT <value>
or 
        xbacklight - set <value> 
to change LCD brightness. Unfortunately, it doesn't work on the hardware
I am testing.

'xset dpms force off' works for me: X.Server 1.4.0.90, Linux ume
2.6.24-19-lpia.
