ESX uses scsi by default and the Moblin images are set up for ide, so you need to convert this somehow, assuming you can't tell ESX that the ide drive is okay - I have no experience with this. For most fiddling I find that getting an iso of a Live CD distribution and booting with it as the cd works well enough to get in and fiddle things in the root filesystem.
