By the way, enabling this adds 128 bytes to the finished kernel. What
are the chances of leaving this set by default for the .30 releases ?

This was in the previous 2.6.29 kernels but has been off since the
2.6.30 releases. This option is required to get the current Broadcom
kernel module built and working on moblin platform, as used by many
Dell Mini9 users out there (among others).
