I've never tried VLC, but if this app is using gstreamer (as opposed to
just directly calling into libs like ffmpeg), then you might want to
verify that you have all the needed gst components by doing a:
$ gst-launch playbin uri=file:///path/to/the/movie.mp4
You should see a window open that plays the video with sound all
working.
