These don't seem like related questions at all.  So I changed the subject and 
I'll answer the easy one.

Create a .desktop file.  Put it in /usr/local/share/applications/<.desktop 
file>    Look in that directory for other exapmles.  Point the Exec value to 
the location of the program on your system.
