Guess what - they are not always unique. Almost but not quite. In many
ways it doesn't matter. A 128 bit random number UUID generated when you
install the software on the Linux end is going to be statistically
adequate for the foreseeable lifetime of the planet and likewise the odds
of hitting a pair of identically numbered devices is remote.
