start with lspci to identify what wireless card you have.

then on to iwconfig -a to see if your interfaces are complaining.

iwlist can tell you what the wifi card sees in terms of signal strength, etc.

my eeepc 1000 came with a lame wifi card, my solution was to rip & replace
with an intel 4965 and its been stellar connectivity since.
