Ok. I changed my command line to:
mvn archetype:generate \
-DarchetypeRepository=http://repo1.maven.org/maven2 \
-DarchetypeGroupId=org.codehaus.mojo \
-DarchetypeArtifactId=gwt-maven-plugin -DarchetypeVersion=2.1.0
However, the project generated has the very same error as first reported in
this issue. Namely:
