I edited the original comment to that effect. Anyway, back to the attached example. I think you are confusing two cases here: inheriting the project version from the parent, and inheriting the version of a dependency from the parent. The attached example demonstrates only the former case: someproject inherits the version from the parent by omitting version specification for itself. On the other hand, projectwithdependency depends on a specific version of someproject, and that dependency is not managed by the parent of projectwithdependency nor by the projectwithdependency itself. Therefore, when one runs: mvn versions:set -DnewVersion=1.0.9-SNAPSHOT -DgroupId=dependencysimple -DartifactId=parent ...only the parent references are updated, because -DartifactId=parent was explicitly specified. As the dependency version of someproject inside projectwithdependency is unmanaged (and does not match the specified artifactId), it is left intact. In my understanding, the plugin behaves correctly in this case, but perhaps my understanding is wrong. I believe that by exercising Option 1 from my earlier post one could achieve the desired behaviour with only a single line change to the project.
