Hello Wareko, hello Graham, hello all,

first of all, I would like to welcome Wareko to this list and to the
NLC. Louis, Graham and I have been talking about the Maori language and
its importance for some time now, and I believe that it would not just
be a honour (like every other NL community here), but also crucial to
have a Maori Native-Language project here, on OpenOffice.org.

Why? because the Maori culture, and henceforth language, needs to
survive and grow. It can do so through its own people, of course. But it
should also be able to do so by digital means. Maori must enter the
internet age, and I believe that the more there will be software
localized in Maori, the more chances it will have to step into the
digital age, survive and prosper in this era.

Maori is also appealing to us, the NLC, because it will be the first
time we'll have a south pacific/polynesian language. We had trouble to
tackle and attract this linguistic family and it's one of our weak
points, obviously.

So I am of course available if you have any questions, Wareko. Could you
maybe tell us more about Maori language, the people who speak it, how
many people speak this language, etc? I will also need the ISO code of
Maori language (2 letters code) so that it can become the domain name of
the project, and of course, you need to register to the NLC and the
OpenOffice.org web site. More info is available at the page Graham
pointed you to, but even more ressources are available on this wiki
page: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/NLC

Best Regards,
Charles-H. Schulz,
Lead of the Native-Language
Confederation, OpenOffice.org
