I want to run this past everyone who might be involved in translating
documents on the OOoWiki and get some of your input.

Periodically we have well-intentioned community members translating Wiki
content. Unfortunately they often translate directly in the original
page, overwriting the original content with the translated content.
We've been catching most of it, and sorting it out with emails to the
people doing the translations and correcting the errors.

I'm working on a few things with the Doc Project members... some we've
implemented, some still in the idea stage... to try and reduce this, and
make things easier for everyone who's doing translations (we want to
encourage people to keep on translating :-) )

We've added this new Help page to the wiki:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Help:Translating
which still needs to be worked on a bit to get cover all the info
required (feel free to edit it and add info that is helpful to first
time translators) - the intended audience for the Help page is for first
time translators and people doing ad-hoc translations. Co-ordinated
translations using offline processes (converting to po or xlif ect) is
not really the focus on the Help:Translating page.

I've added a note to the Wiki that shows up at the bottom of the page
every time you edit - maybe you've noticed it? If not, just edit any
page and look immediately below the Save button.

We've also come across this translation extension:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Translate
which was originally designed to translate MediaWiki messages, but is
apparently being used to translate Wiki content as well. What may be of
interest to everyone involved in the more formal organized translation
process is the fact that it can export po format. If you as a group are
interested in exploring this extension a little, I can install it,
but... it would be up to you to work with it and test it to see if it
meets your needs. I have some preliminary contact info with people who
say it's suitable to use for page translations (see
http://translatewiki.net/wiki/Main_Page )
