gmane is mostly a mailinglist <-> NNTP gateway service. Instead of subscribing to mailinglists, you use a newsreader, that pulls the message via NNTP. There are many people, that feel better with a newsreader, than their mail software. To do its job, the gmane system needs to subscribe to the mailinglist, that it should act as a gateway for. So I assume, that thufir is asking for that.
