Well there was some previous work done with Maven... that has diverged a lot by now but a branch does exist somewhere at https://github.com/apache/nutch/branches Here's some very basic, maybe biased documentation https://gradle.org/maven-vs-gradle/. For me, Gradle has proved to be very fast in comparison to Maven.
