i've checked in some changes to the external variable mechanism as implemented on 1.1 TRUNK. As this is not really a standard/documented feature, it should not affect anyone that is not using it explicitly. Since what should be, often is not, if you happen to notice anything strange on 1.1 TRUNK (especially in <assign> activity) please post the issue and include me in the to: field.
