I have discovered that something in birt is closing System.err during startup. This was discovered when Exception.printStackTrace() stopped showing output(it goes to System.err by default). If I remove the birt component, then err is not closed.
Has anyone else seen this? Hans, do you have any clues as to what is going on here?
