Thanks to all of you for your reviews and feedback; in rev. 1644348 I have
committed an implementation based on the EXTRACT function that is part of the
Standard SQL:2011 specification.
As mentioned in your comments, Derby doesn't support it because it uses instead
the (non standard) YEAR, MONTH, DAY functions.
I am going to propose a patch soon to provide a simple mechanism to use
functions without doing any mapping.
