You must have missed my comment in OPENJPA-1646? Yes the code you pointed at is 
not threadsafe but that it doesn't really matter as the code that is calling 
this initialization routine is treadsafe. Did you encounter this problem when 
using OpenJPA, or are you scanning code for double checked locking?
