Make sure 'theLayer' is an OpenLayers.Layer.Vector<http://dev.openlayers.org/releases/OpenLayers-2.8/doc/apidocs/files/OpenLayers/Layer/Vector-js.html#OpenLayers.Layer.Vector>object.
