Thank you for the answers to those questions. I will be looking into them as I continue to develop my game. I also have been looking into a CSS implementation that may be more in line with what I am trying to do. Since basically all of the map information is stored in a database on the server, it may be just as efficient or faster to generate map data to a cache and then load that page on demand.
Just trying to get the biggest bang for my processor cycles. :) OpenLayers is definitely a nice package, but it may be much bigger than what I need to perform the tasks I'm trying to do. Of course, this is a problem you can run into when using an existing framework in any application.
