Thanks Bart, I think we identified the source of our problems. In fact, our pixels are probably not square. The author of both maps is one of these guys working on global scales using ‘strange’ projections. I obliged him to transform his maps to EPSG:4326, as demanded by the OGC standard specifications, and the result might be an irregular pixel ratio. It seems that MapServer5.2.1, gvSIG and ArcGIS can handle that and display the pixels in place. We will now see if we can get the pixels square somehow or otherwise reproject from the original projection although I am not sure if the latter will finally solve our problem in OpenLayers. I will report to the list whether a simple reprojection does it or we actually have to resample the maps. Thanks for your time, Stefanie
