For me everything works – even this functionality does not depend on check/uncheck LO "Preferences–>Advanced–>Use Java runtime environment" feature. Even if you haven’t installed Java on your Mac OS X notify you about instalation Java. Could you describe your configuration (type of your Mac, version of Mac OS X and version of Java)? Simple test if you have Java installad: Open Terminal.app, type "java -version" (without quotes). If you haven’t installed Java, OS X notify you (show dialog) otherwise you can see version of installed Java.
