I agree. The size reduction is not so important here (the sources are a
tiny part of our offerings and our downloads anyway, even though Apache
Infra will be happy since we host these on the Apache servers), but it's
useless duplication.
I am not sure, if the dropped one should be the *.tar.gz one as our
current full installation packages for Linux provided for the
convenience of our users are *.tar.gz files.
This shouldn't be an issue. Developers who wish to work on OpenOffice on
Linux are able to use bzip2 anyway (while other more exotic formats may
still pose difficulties). On the other hand, users can continue to
download the .tar.gz package with RPMs/DEBs, but in that case we don't
use it for compressing since RPMs/DEBs are already compressed, we could
even use plain tar (for RC3: .tar.gz 156M, .tar 159M)! gzip is faster to
compress/decompress and there would be no benefits in the case of binary
packages, so this can stay as it is.
