right. And Maho used to be a principal in its maintenance. 

I was thinking about OpenBSD because:

"On 14 January 2014, Bob Beck issued a request for funding to cover electrical 
costs. If sustainable funding was not found, Beck suggested OpenBSD would shut 
down.[39] The project soon received a USD$ 20 000 donation from Mircea Popescu, 
the Romanian creator of the MPEx Bitcoin stock exchange, paid in Bitcoins. The 
project raised USD$150 000[40] in response to the appeal, enabling it to pay 
its bills and securing its short term future.[41]"


As is well known, OpenBSD had a dramatic birth: one of the original forks due 
as much to personality as to anything else. It also has kept with the 
"benevolent" dictator model (note the placement of the ironizing quotation 
marks). The begging campaign (aka fundraising) was successful, according to 
Wikipedia.
