I would like to contribute too but honestly I haven't found a way
yet. Are we supposed to create a openoffice account?

There are many ways to contribute:

http://contributing.openoffice.org/

How you proceed and how you get involved is depending on the area you
are interested in. For development good starting points are:

- building OOo
- finding bugs in OOo
- fixing bugs in OOo

For a beginner there is an even better starting point:
- isolating OOo bugs down to their root problem
It is surprising to me that this important item is so often overlooked.

What does isolating a bug mean? It means to find the minimal set of conditions to trigger the root of the problem. E.g. when an issue reporter writes: here is the sample document, when you export it to PDF there is a problem in the footnote on page 845. Then it is interesting to know, whether the problem also happens when all pages before and after the problematic page are removed. Whether the problem also happens if almost all of the other page content removed. Whether the page size makes a difference. On which platforms it happens. etc...
