IIRC from my new_itemsets cws the SvStreams in connection with PoolItems/Pools/ItemSets are only used in binfilter (as you said: who cares?) and in the clipboard code. The second one prevented me from outright killing the SvStream stuff in the ItemSets for now. But as the binary clipboard format is only used to exchange data between OOo and OOo it should not cause too much trouble when you change the serialization (unless one copypastes from two different versions of OOo on the same machine, an rather rare scenario).
