I wonder if there is a best practice to connect with applications. So far many people used webservices such as REST or XMLRPC to connect with webapps. But I am wondering if there is a way to connect to third parties desktop applications. I know that the guys on the forum have been able to do this on windows with COM. However I think this is not a cross platform option. Firefox or more specifically thunderbird uses XPCOM to provide information between applications. My question is how does a smaller generic application connect with OOo without needing to open a socket like the uno dev example shows on the DevGuide?
