I now find that if you have turned on the LiveGps/surveyor autosave 
(which I had), the text associated with each added point is saved as a 
<wpt> in the .gpx file, and can be viewed again by reloading that file. 
This is great, but it should still be possible to save this layer using 
"Save As..."
