Hi, I was playing with some new features of the next GDAL version 1.10 (OSM driver, vsicurl-system for reading data through the net, and pretty much improved geospatial PDF driver). On-demand enhanced simple base maps could sometimes be reasonable alternative for the Mapnik "All-that-we-have-in-OSM-must-be-rendered" style. PDF can also contain attribute data wich gives some nice possibilities.
