Never mind - found it in svgLayers() and pushed the tracks back into the background.
My solution is - have the track in the background - make it wider than the ways - color it an ugly cyan with 0.3 opacity This way it is easily visible under the ways but does not obscure the imagery. You might want to try that in the main version, I think it works much better than obscuring the OSM data with a solid track.
