Adding library asserts, python asserts and talkback to release is equivalent to adding talkback to debug.

Always running the debug version doesn't makes sense for performance reasons.

Adding talkback to release without asserts will miss the majorioty of problems, since asserts are more common than crashes in python programs.

Personally, I think it makes sense to use talkback for both release and debug. However, in debug you're only going to get a small subset of possible errors, e.g. crashes or the proposed missing exception.

If that's the only disavantage, I'm all for blessing talkback (and adding library asserts and feedback on python) as a new "feature" in whatever we call release. I don't want to sound funny but the number of existing users we will inconvenience or confuse is... ahem... "small"... As a data point, all MS Office apps do report bugs now "a la talkback" as well as Windows XP and Firefox (as mentioned by Alec). I witness the difference it made in the MS Office team to estimate the criticallity of bugs: huge! So, IMHO, it's a fair addition to whatever we call release. It will definitely generate very useful data, even from a high level point of view (e.g. how often a given crash is reported...).

The only disavantage of callihng this release is we already have a release version and it doesn't have feedback on python or library asserts, which is what we need feedback on.

How about calling it "the release"?

This functionality can go out in release-level products - Windows XP and Firefox are two that I can think of that have this functionality built in to the end-user release. I'm sure there are more.

Maybe we should change the name so your mother would install it if she's interested in sending back automated results.

I agree it makes sense for a end user debug version to send info back to us

It seems to me that something labelled "end user debug version" is not something my mother would ever install, yet it would be useful if she reported
bugs via something like talkback.
