It probably wouldn't have been the right fix, but naively I would have expected it to at least influence incidence it. Hmm. The intermittent nature of the problem makes me wonder if there is something else going on, a race of some sort: no cache flushes are required to excite the bug, and the system should get into a steady state after a couple of requests. Is there some sort of compression/decompression cycle going on where they sometimes step on each other?
