On another list, someone recommend ProGuard[1] for doing various optimization such as removing unused classes, which may help developers who need to support small devices like telephones. It makes the code smaller and faster. It might not be as good of a solution as the long term plan of splitting up PDFBox into modules, but for those who need something right away, this might help.
